Dress and Grooming

Dress and Grooming

The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

Earrings and Body Piercings

  • Male students will not be allowed to wear earrings or any other visible body piercings.
  • Visible body piercings other than earrings are prohibited for female students.
  • Small, clear spacers will be allowed for all students.
  • All prohibited piercings collected will be held in the office until the end of the term.

Hair and Facial Hair

  • Hair for all students must be out of the eyes and clean.
  • Hair for male students will be cut so that it is off the collar, above the eyebrows, and ears are completely visible. Ponytails and/or braids are not acceptable.
  • Facial hair will not be allowed. Male students will be clean-shaven at all times.
  • Sideburns on male students will not extend below the earlobe.
  • Hair coloring and highlights are acceptable if kept in natural hair colors. Unnatural hair colors are not acceptable.
  • If a student is not within the guidelines of the Dress Code regarding hair, the student will be given a suitable time frame by the administration to ensure their hair is within Dress Code. If a student chooses not to comply, disciplinary action will incur.

Shirts and Tops

  • Shirts must cover skin entirely from the base of the neck to the end of the shoulder to the waist and extend below the waistline of pants, shorts, and skirts when arms are fully extended above the head.
  • Shirts with profanity, suggestible language/images, or inappropriate messaging are strictly prohibited.
  • All shirts and tops must be hemmed. No homemade cutoffs will be permitted. No shirts which show cleavage will be allowed. Shirts may not be worn off the shoulder.
  • Appropriate undergarments will be worn and will not be visible.

Shorts, Skirts, and Pants

  • Shorts must be worn around the waist and an inseam length no shorter than 7 inches for Grades 6-12, and maybe fingertip length for grades Pre-K through Grade 5.
  • Skirts must be worn around the waist and have a length no shorter than 2 inches above the kneecap when standing.
  • Pants must be worn around the waist with no holes exposing skin. No temporary patches will be acceptable, such as tape.
  • Form-fitting attire (such as tights or leggings made of a Spandex-like material) may not be worn by students in grades five and above as a top layer. Denim material is an acceptable material.
  • All shorts, skirts, and pants must be hemmed, and no cutoffs will be permitted.

One-Piece Outfits

  • One-piece outfits are garments that act as both a top and bottom and must fully cover skin from the base of the neck to the end of the shoulder to 2 inches above the kneecap when standing.

Head Coverings

  • Hats, caps, hoods, etc., shall not be worn in school buildings.
  • Caps/hats may be worn in the gym after school hours but must be worn with the bill forward at all times.

Other

  • No items of clothing or garments are to be worn that the administration considers or deems inappropriate.
  • Tattoos must be covered at all times, including during attendance or participation in any extra-curricular events.
  • Garments, including house shoes or slippers, will not be permitted for sleepwear.
  • The dress code shall be followed at all school events, on and off campus.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be allowed to correct the problem and return to the classroom. Dress code offenses will be documented (even if corrected), and consequences will follow repeat offenses.

The administration has the discretion to limit any other dress and grooming that is deemed inappropriate or distracting to the educational process. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be allowed to correct the problem at school.

Students who choose not to correct dress code infractions will incur discipline, which could include assignment to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day until the problem is corrected or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action.
